Spiced Sugar Rim Garnish for Hot Beverages
This recipe creates a decorative spiced sugar rim to elevate your hot drink glasses for special events. It yields about 2 cups of a dry mix, which combines toasted nuts, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, processed into a powder. To use, you dip the mug rim first into a liqueur like Amaretto, then into the spice mix to coat it. The garnish sets in a few minutes before you pour in your hot beverage. Any leftover dry mixture stores well in an airtight container for months.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sliced almonds or 1 cup hazelnuts, toasted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 cup Amaretto or 1/8 cup Frangelico, approximately
Method
- Place all the ingredients, excluding the liqueur, into a food processor and process until a fine powder forms.
- For garnishing, spread a portion of the prepared powder onto a plate and pour the liqueur into a separate shallow dish.
- Take a mug suitable for hot liquids and dip its rim first into the alcohol, then press it into the powder to create an even coating.
- Allow the coated rim to set for a few minutes to firm up before carefully filling the glass with your selected hot drink.
