This dish is a filled loaf shared by a colleague. It uses a hollowed-out French bread loaf as a base. The filling consists of browned minced beef and onion, seasoned and combined with salsa, green chillies, and tomato sauce. This mixture is spooned into the bread shell, topped with mozzarella and cheddar, and baked briefly. The final result is sliced into portions for serving. Preparation and cooking times are approximate.

Mexican Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 3/4 lb hamburger
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • salt & pepper
  • 8 ounces salsa (or more to taste)
  • 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • grated mozzarella cheese (to taste)
  • grated cheddar cheese (to taste)

Method

  1. Set your oven to heat to 350 degrees.
  2. Slice the French bread lengthwise into two halves.
  3. Remove the soft interior from both halves, creating a shell roughly 1-inch thick.
  4. Cook the hamburger and chopped onion in a skillet until browned.
  5. Pour away any excess fat from the pan.
  6. Mix in salt, pepper, salsa, diced green chilies, and tomato sauce with the meat and onion.
  7. Warm the mixture until it begins to bubble.
  8. Divide the filling equally between the two hollowed bread halves.
  9. Sprinkle a generous amount of grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese over the top.
  10. Put the loaded bread onto a cookie sheet and bake until the cheese has melted, which takes a few minutes.
  11. Cut each filled half crosswise into sections about 2-inch wide.
  12. Please note that the yield will change based on the specific size of your French bread loaf.
