(Almost) Salt-Free Seasoning
This Canadian seasoning blend is designed to be almost free of added salt, offering a robust flavour profile from a mix of spices and dried herbs. You will combine steak spice, mustard powder, paprika, marjoram, and seeds like dill, coriander, and caraway. Ground sage, rosemary, thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder complete the mix. The whole blend is toasted to enhance its aroma before being stored for future use.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tablespoons steak spice
- 1 1/2 tablespoons mustard powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram (or oregano)
- 3/4 teaspoon dill seed
- 3/4 teaspoon coriander seed
- 3/4 teaspoon caraway seed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
- 1/2 teaspoon ground rosemary
- 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
Method
- Mix all the listed spices together and grind them to a fine consistency.
- Transfer the ground spices to a dry frying pan and toast them for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly but slowly to prevent burning.
- Allow the toasted spice mixture to cool down fully before transferring it to an airtight container for storage.
