Oriental Pepper Steak
This classic pepper steak dish is a treasured family recipe. Strips of beef are simmered in a savoury sauce with green pepper, ginger, and garlic, then thickened and served over hot white rice. It's a flavourful and satisfying meal that comes together in under an hour.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 lb bonelss chuck or 1 lb ground round, cut up into strips
- 1 .oz envelope lipton onions or 1 onion mushroom
- 2 cups water
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 green pepper, cut into thin strips
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
- 1 medium tomatoes, cut into wedges
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- hot white rice
Method
- Heat the oil in a skillet and brown the beef strips, then drain.
- Add the soup mix, which has been blended with 1 1/2 cups of water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Mix in the green pepper strips, soy sauce, ground ginger, and chopped garlic.
- Cover again and simmer for 15 minutes or until the beef becomes tender.
- Stir in the tomato wedges, followed by the cornstarch blended with the remaining water.
- Bring back to a boil, then simmer while stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Serve the beef mixture arranged over hot white rice.
