Cheese Ham Buns
These homemade buns elevate the classic cheese bun by incorporating slices of ham rolled into the dough. The recipe uses a straightforward yeast dough, which is filled with ham and cheddar cheese, rolled, sliced, and baked until golden. It yields 18 soft, savoury buns perfect for a snack or side. Using a bread maker for the dough can simplify the process further.
Ingredients
- 1 (15 ml) package fast rising yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons melted margarine
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/8 cups hot water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
- 4 slices black forest ham or 4 slices honey-roasted ham (works best)

- Measure the hot water into a separate bowl and add the margarine.
- Stir the mixture together until the margarine has fully melted.
- Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients, then add the beaten egg.

- Form the dough into a ball and transfer it to a greased bowl.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth followed by a dry one, and leave in a warm spot until doubled in size, approximately 1 hours.
- Once the dough has doubled.
- Roll the risen dough out to form a 10" by 15" rectangle.
- Lay the ham slices down the centre of the dough, overlapping them slightly.
- Scatter about 3/4 of the grated cheese evenly over the entire surface of the dough.
- Roll the dough up tightly, like a jellyroll.
- Slice the roll into 1" pieces and place them cut side down in a greased cake pan.
- Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the tops of the buns.
- Leave the pan in a warm place until the buns have doubled in size again.
- Bake the buns for approximately 15-20 mins at 375 degrees F.
- Tip the pan over to release the buns onto a plate.
