11 Layer Salad
This impressive layered salad is ideal for a potluck gathering. It features crisp lettuce, bacon, hard-boiled eggs, cheese and fresh vegetables in distinct strata. A creamy dressing made from mayonnaise, sour cream and seasonings is spread over the top. The salad needs to chill for several hours before being tossed and served to a group of 10-12.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 heads iceberg lettuce (or any kind of lettuce you prefer)
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1/3 cup chopped green onion
- 1 cup frozen green peas or 1 cup frozen peas and corn, thawed
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 3 chopped tomatoes
- 10 -12 slices bacon, well cooked
- 3 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
- 1 cup grated cheese, your preference (I used a combination of Jack and Cheddar)
- olives or garbanzo beans
- 3 cups mayonnaise
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2-1 teaspoon seasoning salt
- 1/4-1/2 garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Method
- Take one head of lettuce, chop it, and arrange it in a large salad bowl.
- Prepare the remaining vegetables and the hard-boiled eggs by chopping them, then layer them over the lettuce.
- Add a layer using half of the cooked bacon and half of the grated cheese.
- Chop the remaining half head of lettuce and place it over the existing layers.
- Combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, seasoning salt, garlic powder and brown sugar to make the dressing, then spread it over the salad.
- Scatter the rest of the bacon and cheese over the top.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salad for several hours.
- Toss the salad thoroughly just prior to serving to combine all the ingredients with the dressing.
