This recipe offers a more flavourful and adaptable alternative to shop-bought versions. It combines lean ground beef with onion, green pepper, and a spicy tomato sauce, all served over pasta. You can easily modify it by adding different vegetables, adjusting the cayenne pepper, or even swapping the beef for chicken, turkey, or seafood. The entire process takes just 35 minutes, resulting in a satisfying and customisable family meal.

Spicy Homemade Hamburger Helper

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1/2 Spanish onions or 1 regular onion, chopped finely
  • 1 green pepper, chopped finely
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt!)
  • 1 (680 ml) can of your favourite spaghetti sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • pasta
  • parmesan cheese (optional)

Method

  1. Finely chop the onion and green pepper, then cook them with the ground beef until the meat is fully browned.
  2. Pour in the spaghetti sauce, reduce the heat, cover the pan, and allow it to simmer for about 15 min.
  3. While the sauce cooks, prepare the pasta in a separate saucepan according to package directions.
  4. Once the pasta is cooked, drain it thoroughly and combine it with the meat sauce.
  5. Stir the pasta and sauce together until they are well incorporated.
  6. If you like, finish the dish by sprinkling grated parmesan cheese over the top before serving.
