Bacon-Cheeseburger Pasta Bake

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces elbow macaroni (3 c.) or 12 ounces shell macaroni (3 c.)
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup dill pickle relish, drained (or can chop dill pickles)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

Method

  1. Position the oven rack in the centre and heat the oven to 475.
  2. Use vegetable oil spray to coat a 13 x 9 inch baking dish.
  3. Place the pasta in the dish, then crumble the ground beef into half-inch pieces over it. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the water, tomato sauce, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper. Check the seasoning.
  5. Pour this mixture over the contents of the baking dish and use tongs to combine everything gently.
  6. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. While it bakes, microwave the bacon on a plate until crisp, about 5 minutes.
  8. Move the bacon to a plate lined with paper towels to drain, then break it into half-inch pieces.
  9. Take the dish from the oven and stir the pasta well, ensuring you scrape the sides and bottom.
  10. Arrange the cheese slices over the top and scatter the crumbled bacon over them.
  11. Place the dish back in the oven, uncovered, and bake until the pasta is al dente and the cheese has melted, 5-8 minutes.
  12. Allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes, then sprinkle with the chopped onion if desired before serving.
