Spicy Beef Goulash
This traditional goulash recipe features cubes of sirloin beef cooked with bacon, onions and green pepper in a rich, spiced tomato sauce. A blend of paprika and red pepper flakes provides a gentle warmth. The dish is finished with a mixture of sour cream and flour to create a luxuriously creamy consistency just before serving, perfect for a comforting family meal.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs sirloin beef
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 2 medium onions, sliced
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or adjust to taste)
- salt & freshly ground black pepper (I use seasoned salt)
- 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 large green pepper, chopped
- 1 (19 ounce) can tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 cup sour cream
Method
- Slice the beef into cubes of bite size.
- Cook the chopped bacon in a large skillet until browned, then take it out, let it cool a little and cut it into bigger pieces, keeping the fat in the pan.
- Place the sliced onions and chopped garlic into the same skillet and cook until they become soft.
- Stir the paprika and red pepper flakes into the onion and garlic mixture and cook for 30 seconds.
- Put the beef cubes into the pan along with all the remaining ingredients except the sour cream, put a lid on and cook for about 1-1/2 hours until the meat is tender, stirring frequently.
- Combine the flour with the sour cream just before you are ready to serve, then mix this into the goulash.
- Heat and stir the goulash for 1-2 minutes until everything is thoroughly incorporated, ensuring it does not come to a boil.
