These stuffed jalapeños are an excellent choice for a barbecue appetiser or tailgate party. The peppers are filled with a blend of cream cheese, Cajun seasoning and garlic powder, then wrapped in bacon and grilled. They take about 20 minutes to prepare and cook, yielding 30 individual bites. The heat level can be adjusted by how thoroughly you clean the peppers. They are a savoury, crowd-pleasing starter to enjoy while waiting for the main course.

BBQ Stuffed Jalapeños

Ingredients

  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 15 large jalapeno peppers
  • 15 slices bacon, cut in half widthwise
  • 30 toothpicks

Method

  1. Combine the cream cheese, Cajun seasoning and garlic powder in a bowl, ensuring they are thoroughly blended.
  2. You may incorporate extra Cajun seasoning for a spicier result.
  3. Take the stems off the jalapeños, slice them lengthwise and scoop out all the seeds and white membranes to create space for the filling.
  4. Spoon the cream cheese mixture into each prepared jalapeño half.
  5. Encircle each filled half with one piece of the halved bacon and fasten it using a toothpick.
  6. Once the barbecue coals are hot, arrange the jalapeños on the grill with the filling facing upwards. Cook them for 10 minutes or until the bacon has changed colour and is sizzling.
  7. The final heat of these appetisers can be adjusted to be very spicy or quite mild.
  8. Ensure the cream cheese mixture is mixed completely to avoid an inconsistent distribution of spice.
