Transform classic apple pie into a playful finger food. Pastry sheets are layered with a spiced apple filling, frozen for easy slicing, then cut into strips and baked. Baked Apple Pie Fries with Salted Caramel Dipping Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups canned Apple Pie Filling ((increase to 1 3/4 cups if using US refrigerated pie crust) (Note 1))
  • 3 tbsp sugar ((your choice - white, brown, raw) (Note 2))
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 sheets frozen shortcrust pastry ((25cm/10" square) (do not thaw) OR 14 oz refrigerated pie crust (Note 1))
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp sugar granules ((or ordinary sugar) (optional - for sprinkling))
  • Oil spray
  • 1 cup caster sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream ((not whipped))
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Method

  1. Process the Apple Pie Filling, sugar and cinnamon in a food processor until smooth.
  2. Lay one pastry sheet on a flat surface and spread the filling over it, leaving a small border. Top with the second sheet. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar granules if desired, and freeze for at least 1 hour.
  3. Heat your oven to 180C/350F. Lightly spray a large baking tray with oil.
  4. Take the pastry from the freezer. Allow it to soften for 5 to 10 minutes. it should not be frozen stiff. Ensure the pie filling remains frozen.
  5. Slice the pastry into fry shapes using a large knife. Cut into 12 vertical strips, then 3 horizontal cuts to create 36 pieces.
  6. Place the pieces onto the prepared baking tray and let them sit at room temperature as the oven finishes heating.
  7. Bake for 15 to 25 minutes until the tops are a golden brown colour.
  8. After removing from the oven, let the fries rest for 5 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack.
  9. Enjoy the baked fries with the Salted Caramel Sauce for dipping.
