⏱ 20 mins 🍽 ['8', '1 pint'] 🌶 tex-mex 🏷 Appetizer

This recipe guides you through creating a classic Tex-Mex salsa using your oven's broiler. Roma tomatoes, white onion, and a jalapeno are roasted until their skins blacken, imparting a deep, smoky flavour. The charred vegetables are then blended with fresh cilantro, lime juice, and garlic salt to create a smooth, vibrant dip. Perfect as an appetiser, it yields about 1 pint and is ready in roughly 20 minutes.

Authentic Fire-Roasted Tex-Mex Salsa

Ingredients

  • cooking spray
  • 5 large Roma tomatoes, halved lengthwise
  • 0.25 large white onion
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, stem removed
  • 0.33333334326744 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1.5 teaspoons garlic salt, or to taste

Method

  1. Position an oven rack approximately 6 inches from the heating element and switch your oven's broiler to high.
  2. Coat a 9x13-inch glass casserole dish with cooking spray. Place the tomato halves in the dish with their cut sides facing down, then add the onion and jalapeno.
  3. Broil the vegetables until the tomato skins become blackened and blistered, which should take 10 to 15 minutes. Take out the onion and jalapeno partway through, once their skins have softened slightly.
  4. Transfer all the broiled vegetables into a blender. Add the chopped cilantro, lime juice, and 1 teaspoon of garlic salt. Pulse the mixture until it reaches a smooth consistency. Sample the salsa and adjust the seasoning with the remaining garlic salt according to your preference.
