Won Tons
This is a treasured family recipe for homemade won tons, a favourite for birthday celebrations. Ground beef is seasoned and wrapped in wonton skins before being deep-fried to a crisp, golden finish. They are served with a simple, sweet and tangy sauce made from pineapple, brown sugar, and ketchup. The entire process takes about 30 minutes to complete.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon Accent seasoning (optional)
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 packages wonton wrappers (skins)
- water
- salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 4 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 4 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple in juice
Method
- Combine the ground beef, egg, Accent seasoning if using, sliced green onions, soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper in a bowl.
- Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the beef mixture onto the centre of each wonton wrapper.
- Use water to moisten the edges of the wrapper.
- Fold the wrapper over the filling to create a triangle shape.
- Dampen one corner of the triangle's long side, then bring the two points on that long side together and press to seal.
- Continue filling and shaping all the remaining wonton wrappers.
- Deep fry the won tons in batches of 8-10 at 350 degrees farenheit for roughly 2-3 minutes, until they turn golden brown.
- Transfer the fried won tons to drain on paper towels.
- Lightly sprinkle the hot won tons with salt.
- Prepare the accompanying sauce for serving.
- To make the sauce, combine all the listed sauce ingredients in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Cook while stirring for about 2 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.
