Salt and Pepper Tofu
This recipe offers a delicious alternative to soy-heavy marinades for baked or pan-fried tofu. Extra firm tofu is pressed to remove moisture, then coated in a vibrant mix of minced jalapeño, garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, sugar, and five-spice powder. The cubes are cooked until golden and crispy, then finished with fresh green onions. It's a savoury, low-sodium dish perfect for serving four to six people.
Ingredients
- 1 lb extra firm tofu, drained
- 1 jalapeno pepper, minced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 green onions, chopped
Method
- Slice the tofu lengthwise into three even pieces. Lay them on an absorbent towel and cover with another towel. Press down with a heavy pot to extract water, ideally for 20-30 minutes.
- Slice the pressed tofu into 1" cubes.
- Mix the minced jalapeño, garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, sugar, and five-spice powder in a large bowl. Add the tofu cubes and toss to coat thoroughly.
- Warm the oil in a large skillet. Add the coated tofu and cook for 8 minutes, turning the cubes every 1-2 minutes. Stir in the green onions and cook for 2 more minutes until the tofu is golden brown.
