This recipe creates a classic New York-style onion sauce for hot dogs. Thinly sliced onions and garlic are simmered until tender, then combined with tomato sauce, spices, and a hint of sweetness. The result is a rich, flavourful condiment that cooks for 50 minutes to develop depth. It yields approximately 2 cups of sauce, ideal for your next barbecue. The optional addition of ground cloves can enhance the overall flavour profile.

New York Hot Dog Onion Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 4 cups thinly sliced onions
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 8 ounces red tomato sauce, smooth not chunky
  • 8 ounces water
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 dash ground cloves

Method

  1. Cook the sliced onions and minced garlic in oil for 15 to 20 minutes until they are soft but not browned.
  2. Mix in the flour and continue to cook for at least one minute while stirring.
  3. Pour in all the other ingredients, place a lid on the pan, and let it cook gently for 50 minutes.
  4. Should the mixture become overly thick, you can stir in a little extra water.
  5. Take out the bay leaves from the sauce.
  6. This sauce is perfect for serving on barbecued hot dogs, topped with an extra spread of mustard.
  7. Adding the cloves is recommended if you are open to it, as they help to highlight the onion's sweetness and the sauce's tart notes.
