Simple Sausage and Cheese Manicotti
This streamlined manicotti dish requires only five key components. Bulk pork sausage is mixed with cottage cheese to create a rich filling for the pasta tubes. After arranging them in a dish, they are covered with a jar of Italian tomato sauce and baked. Finally, a topping of shredded mozzarella is added and melted until bubbly for a comforting and simple meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb bulk pork sausage
- 2 cups 4% cottage cheese
- 1 (8 ounce) package manicotti
- 1 (26 ounce) jar Italian-style tomato sauce
- 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
Method
- Mix the pork sausage with the cottage cheese in a large bowl. Fill the manicotti shells with this mixture. Arrange the stuffed shells in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Pour the jar of tomato sauce over the top.
- Cover the dish and place it in an oven preheated to 350°. Bake for 55-60 minutes. The manicotti is ready when a meat thermometer inserted into the centre of a shell shows 160°.
- Remove the cover from the baking dish. Scatter the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top. Return to the oven and bake for another 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese has fully melted. Allow the dish to rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.
