5 Layer Delicious Dessert
This popular layered dessert is a favourite for gatherings and potlucks. It features a baked nut crust, a sweet cream cheese layer, tart cherries, a smooth vanilla and chocolate pudding mix, and is finished with whipped topping and grated chocolate. The recipe can be made with lower fat alternatives for a lighter version. It requires about 65 minutes to prepare and serves 12 to 15 people.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup flour
- 3/4 cup butter or 3/4 cup margarine
- 1 cup nuts (I use pecans)
- 9 ounces Cool Whip
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (20 ounce) container of comstock cherries
- 1 (3 1/2 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding
- 1 (3 1/2 ounce) package chocolate instant pudding
- 3 1/2 cups milk
- 9 ounces Cool Whip
- 1 Hershey Bar, grated
Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Combine the flour, butter or margarine, and nuts to create a dry mixture, then press it evenly into the base of a 9x13 inch baking dish using your fingers.
- Bake the crust for 25 minutes.
- Allow the baked crust to cool completely before adding the next layer.
- For the second layer, blend the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and one 9 ounce container of Cool Whip together, then spread this over the cooled crust.
- Open the container of cherries and distribute them evenly across the cream cheese layer.
- Whisk both packets of instant pudding with the milk, then pour this mixture over the cherry layer.
- Spread the remaining 9 ounces of Cool Whip over the pudding and finish by grating the Hershey bar on top.
- Refrigerate the assembled dessert until it is fully set.
