4-H Michigan Sauce
This recipe creates a traditional Michigan sauce, a savoury meat topping for hot dogs. It combines ground beef with crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, and a blend of seasonings including chilli mix, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. The mixture is simmered until the beef is thoroughly cooked, resulting in a thick, flavourful sauce. It yields enough for approximately twelve servings.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs ground beef
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (28 ounce) can tomato puree
- 1 (1 1/4 ounce) package chili seasoning mix
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup mustard
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- salt
- pepper
Method
- Combine the raw ground beef, crushed tomatoes with their juice, and all other listed ingredients except for the salt and pepper in a large stockpot.
- Use a potato masher to break down the mixture until it achieves a very smooth consistency.
- Position the stockpot on the cooker.
- Allow the sauce to simmer for about 2-3 hours, until the beef is fully cooked. It may be ready in under two hours. Add water if cooking for the full duration, checking and stirring every 30 minutes. Season to your preference with salt and pepper.
- For serving, place a steamed hot dog in a bun and cover it generously with the Michigan sauce.
