This is a distinctive take on pepper steak, originating from a newspaper. It features beef browned with onion and garlic, then simmered in a tangy sauce made from ketchup, soy sauce, paprika, and mustard. The dish cooks slowly for over two hours, resulting in tender, flavourful meat. It has become a requested favourite for family suppers.

Hungarian Pepper Steak

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs beef pepper steak or 1 1/2 lbs beef stew meat
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt, (the original recipe stated 2 tsp. I cut it down due to reviews and I tried it again.)
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Method

  1. Warm the oil in a large skillet, then add the beef, sliced onion, and minced garlic.
  2. Cook, stirring, until the meat is browned and the onion pieces have softened.
  3. Mix the ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, salt, paprika, mustard, and water together in a large bowl.
  4. Pour this combined sauce over the meat in the skillet, cover it, and let it simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
