Hungarian Pepper Steak
This is a distinctive take on pepper steak, originating from a newspaper. It features beef browned with onion and garlic, then simmered in a tangy sauce made from ketchup, soy sauce, paprika, and mustard. The dish cooks slowly for over two hours, resulting in tender, flavourful meat. It has become a requested favourite for family suppers.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs beef pepper steak or 1 1/2 lbs beef stew meat
- 3 tablespoons oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt, (the original recipe stated 2 tsp. I cut it down due to reviews and I tried it again.)
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard
- 1 1/2 cups water
Method
- Warm the oil in a large skillet, then add the beef, sliced onion, and minced garlic.
- Cook, stirring, until the meat is browned and the onion pieces have softened.
- Mix the ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, salt, paprika, mustard, and water together in a large bowl.
- Pour this combined sauce over the meat in the skillet, cover it, and let it simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
