Turkish Pizza with Spiced Pomegranate Beef and Feta

This homemade Turkish pizza offers a delicious alternative to takeaway. The base is made from a bread mix, topped with a richly spiced minced beef sauce flavoured with pomegranate molasses, cumin and cinnamon. It's finished with tangy pickled cherry peppers, crumbled feta cheese and toasted pine nuts for a satisfying and unique main course that serves six.

Turkish Pizza with Spiced Pomegranate Beef and Feta

Ingredients

  • 500g pack bread mix
  • 1 tsp olive oil plus a little extra for the dough
  • 2 medium onions chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves chopped
  • 250g extra-lean minced beef
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp red chilli flakes
  • 5 tbsp tomato purée
  • 6 tbsp pomegranate molasses
  • 400g pickled cherry peppers roughly chopped
  • 50g feta cheese crumbled
  • 1 tbsp pine nuts

Method

  1. Prepare the dough according to the pack directions, setting aside roughly 2 tbsp of the bread mix for later use. Knead the dough for 8-10 mins, then oil it, transfer to a large bowl, cover and leave to prove until it has doubled in size. This typically takes 1-2 hrs, depending on the warmth of your kitchen.
  2. Preheat your oven to 240C/220C fan/gas 9, or its highest temperature. Scatter a little of the saved flour over two baking trays and place them in the oven to get hot.
  3. Warm 1 tsp olive oil in a large frying pan. Cook the chopped onions and garlic for a few mins until soft. Introduce the minced beef and brown it for about 5 mins, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain away any extra oil. Stir in the cumin, cinnamon, chilli flakes, 2 tbsp tomato purée, 5 tbsp pomegranate molasses and seasoning. Cook for 1 min, then take off the heat.
  4. Split the dough into six pieces. Dust your work surface with the rest of the flour and roll each piece out to around 25cm in diameter. Carefully take the hot trays from the oven and place two pizza bases on each, cooking in batches. Spread the leftover tomato purée over each base. Add the spiced beef, followed by the chopped peppers, crumbled feta and pine nuts. Bake for 10 mins, or until the bases are golden and cooked through. Finish by drizzling with the remaining pomegranate molasses before serving.
