Sweet and Spicy Air Fryer Butternut Squash Fries
These butternut squash fries offer a delicious alternative to traditional potato fries. Coated in a savoury mix of garlic, black pepper, and Chinese five-spice, they are air fried until perfectly crisp. The method yields a sweet and spicy side dish with fewer carbohydrates, ideal for complementing a main course. This recipe serves six people and takes just 25 minutes from start to finish.
Ingredients
- 1 large butternut squash, peeled and cut into "fries"
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
Method
- Set your air fryer to preheat to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
- Transfer the prepared squash fries to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the olive oil, five-spice powder, minced garlic, sea salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together until evenly coated, then arrange the fries in the air fryer basket.
- Air fry the squash, giving the basket a shake every 5 minutes, until the fries are crisp. This will take 15 to 20 minutes total. Once cooked, transfer the fries to a serving dish and sprinkle with more sea salt if desired.
