Swedish Chocolate Balls (Chokladbollar)
These Swedish chocolate balls, known as chokladbollar, are a simple and satisfying no-bake treat. They combine toasted oats with cocoa, a hint of coffee and coconut oil for a rich flavour. Rolled in grated coconut, they firm up in the fridge for a perfect bite-sized snack or appetiser. This recipe makes 16 pieces and comes together in just 30 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
- 0.5 cup white sugar
- 3.5 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 pinch kosher salt
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper
- 0.25 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 0.25 cup coconut oil, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee
- 0.5 cup unsweetened grated coconut, or as needed
Method
- Place a pan over heat and toast the oats, tossing them until they become fragrant and are lightly toasted, which will take 5 to 7 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, cocoa powder, salt, cayenne, softened butter, coconut oil, vanilla extract and coffee. Stir in the toasted oats until everything is fully combined.
- Use a sorbet scoop to portion the mixture into balls. Coat each ball in the grated coconut and place them on a baking pan lined with parchment. Refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes to allow them to firm up.
