Stewed Cabbage
This is a classic Eastern European preparation where cabbage is gently stewed until tender. It combines chopped onions, celery and garlic, which are first softened in butter. The cabbage is then added along with a can of stewed tomatoes and seasoned simply. The mixture simmers until the cabbage is perfectly soft, resulting in a comforting and versatile dish suitable as a side or a light main.
Ingredients
- 0.25 cup butter
- 2 onions, chopped
- 1 stalk celery, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 medium head cabbage, cut into squares
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes, with liquid
- salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Place the butter in a large saucepan to melt. Cook the chopped onion, celery and garlic for 3 to 5 minutes until they become translucent. Mix in the cabbage, lower the heat and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add the tomatoes with their liquid to the pan. Season with salt and pepper as desired. Cover the saucepan and continue cooking for 30 to 40 minutes until the cabbage pieces are tender.
