Spicy Falafels

These falafels are an economical and tasty option, great for students or a quick meal. The patties are made from mashed chickpeas, onion, garlic, and a blend of spices, bound with egg and pan-fried until golden. They are delicious served hot, either tucked into pitta bread with tahini sauce or alongside a fresh salad and hummus. This recipe yields six satisfying patties.

Spicy Falafels

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • 400 g chickpeas, washed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs
  • 1 egg, beaten

Method

  1. Warm one tablespoon of the sunflower oil in a pan and cook the finely chopped onion and crushed garlic until soft.
  2. Transfer the cooked onion and garlic to a large bowl containing the drained chickpeas, ground cumin, ground coriander, and dried herbs. Mash the mixture thoroughly, then stir in the beaten egg. Use your hands to shape the mixture into patties.
  3. Cook the patties in the remaining tablespoon of oil for 3 minutes on each side.
  4. Enjoy the falafels while they are still hot.
