Spicy Chopped Cheese Sandwich
This recipe puts a fiery spin on the classic New York chopped cheese sandwich. Lean ground beef is seasoned with Sriracha, formed into patties and cooked in a cast iron skillet until a crust forms. The patties are then chopped, combined with caramelised onions and topped with melted American cheese before being piled into toasted hoagie buns with fresh lettuce and tomato. It's a quick and satisfying meal ready in about 25 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 0.25 cup chopped onions
- 12 ounces lean ground beef
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 3 slices American cheese
- 2 hoagie buns, split and toasted
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 roma tomato, thinly sliced
Method
- Melt the butter in a small skillet. Cook the chopped onions for about 5 minutes until they become tender and start to caramelise. Take the skillet off the heat and set the onions aside.
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with the Sriracha sauce until it is fully combined. Shape this mixture into two thin patties and season them with salt and pepper.
- Place a large cast iron skillet on the heat. Cook the hamburger patties for 5 minutes until the bottom develops a crust. Turn them over and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Use a wide spatula to break the patties into large pieces. Scatter the cooked onions among the beef pieces. Arrange the cheese slices on top and cook for 2 minutes until the cheese has melted.
- Evenly distribute the hamburger and cheese mixture between the toasted hoagie rolls. Finish each sandwich with a topping of shredded lettuce and thinly sliced tomato.
