These turkey burgers are packed with flavour from chipotle, garlic, and a blend of spices. The patties are mixed by hand, formed, and then grilled until perfectly seared. Spicy Chipotle Turkey Burgers

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4-1 1/2 lbs ground turkey (light and dark meat, 7% fat)
  • 2 -3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 canned chipotle chile in adobo, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons cayenne (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

Method

  1. Combine the ground turkey, minced garlic, chopped chipotle, oregano, mustard, chili powder, cumin, and optional cayenne in a bowl. Mix with your hands until everything is well combined. Shape the mixture into four equal balls, then flatten each into a patty about 3/4 to 1-inch thick, handling the meat minimally.
  2. Heat your grill to medium-high. Lightly oil the grill grate.
  3. Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper. Grill the burgers until they have a good sear on each side, which takes about 5 minutes for medium-rare or 6 minutes for medium.
  4. For an indoor method, heat a cast-iron skillet. Add the burgers to the hot, greased pan. Cook until seared on both sides, for 8 to 10 minutes for medium-rare or 10 to 12 minutes for medium.
  5. Just before the burgers finish cooking, top each one with a slice of cheese. Also, place the bun halves cut-side down on the grill to toast lightly, then remove them.
  6. Serve the cooked, cheesy patties on the toasted buns with your preferred optional toppings.
