Spicy Beef Stew
This hearty spicy beef stew is an ideal comfort dish for cooler seasons. It features browned stew meat cooked with garlic, seasonings, and a blend of frozen vegetables in a rich, thickened broth. The recipe uses a simple milk and flour mixture to create a satisfying consistency. It is designed to serve four to six people and takes about 45 minutes to prepare from start to finish.
Ingredients
- 1 lb stew meat
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons margarine
- 2 1/2 tablespoons flour
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons white wine
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons onion salt
- 1 teaspoon red pepper powder
- 2 tablespoons ground pepper
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
- 4 cups water
- 1 package california-blend frozen vegetables (broccoli, califlower, carrots)
- 1/2 cup milk, mixed with
- 3 tablespoons flour
Method
- Place the stew meat, minced garlic, and margarine into a cooking pot.
- Cook the meat until no pink colour remains.
- Introduce the flour and stir it around to cover the meat.
- Pour in 1 1/4 cups water, cover the pot, and let it boil for 10 minutes.
- Mix in the onion salt, red pepper powder, ground pepper, salt, Kitchen Bouquet, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, and the frozen vegetables. Add 4 cups of water, or enough to submerge the meat and vegetables.
- Cover the pot once more and boil the stew for another 20 minutes.
- Add more water during cooking if necessary to keep everything covered.
- Stir in the combined milk and flour to thicken the sauce, then let it simmer for 5 minutes.
- For more tender meat, allow the stew to boil for an extra 10 minutes before adding the thickening mixture.
