This simple dinner for two combines sliced all-beef franks with dark red kidney beans in a rich, lightly spiced sauce. Onions are sauteed before a mixture of tomato sauce, beef broth, flour, cider vinegar, Worcestershire, Sriracha, sugar, chili powder, and salt is added to create the base. The beans and franks are then simmered in the sauce until everything is hot. It's a flavourful and satisfying meal that comes together in about 30 minutes.

Spicy Beans and Franks for Two

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 medium onion, vertically sliced
  • 0.5 cup tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup beef broth, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce, or more to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon white sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (15.5 ounce) can dark red kidney beans, undrained
  • 0.5 pound all-beef franks, cut into 1-inch slices

Method

  1. Place a large skillet over heat and melt the butter. Add the sliced onion and cook until it becomes tender, which should take 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. In a separate small bowl, combine the tomato sauce, 1/2 cup beef broth, flour, cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Sriracha, sugar, chili powder, and salt. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the onions and cook while stirring continuously until it begins to thicken, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the kidney beans and sliced franks to the skillet. Lower the heat, cover the pan, and let it simmer until the franks are thoroughly heated, 8 to 10 minutes. You can add a little more beef broth during cooking if the sauce gets too thick.
