Spicy Baked Tofu

Ingredients

  • 1 (12 ounce) package tofu
  • 2 tablespoons Japanese low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger root
  • 1.5 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • cooking spray

Method

  1. Layer two paper towels on a plate and set the tofu on them. Cover with two more paper towels and top with a heavy plate. Allow it to rest for 5 to 30 minutes until liquid is released. Slice the tofu into strips that are 1/2-inch thick.
  2. In a large resealable plastic bag, mix the soy sauce, chilli sauce, ginger and hoisin sauce. Place the tofu strips inside, ensuring they are coated in the marinade. Press out the air, seal the bag and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour.
  3. Set your oven to heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Use cooking spray to lightly coat a baking sheet.
  4. Take the tofu from the marinade, letting any extra drip off. Place the pieces on the prepared baking sheet. Dispose of the leftover marinade.
  5. Place in the heated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, turning the pieces once halfway, until the tofu is firm to the touch.
