Spicy Apple Glazed Meatballs
These meatballs offer a Chinese-influenced flavour profile, combining a hint of spice with a touch of sweetness. The recipe involves baking the meatballs before tossing them in a glossy glaze made from apple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, and ginger, finished with fresh green onions. It yields approximately 28 meatballs and can be prepared in around half an hour.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 slices white bread
- 1 lb ground chuck
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 cup apple juice
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 6 green onions, sliced
Method
- Whisk the egg and milk in a large bowl. Tear the bread into small pieces and add them to the bowl, stirring to coat. Allow this to stand for 10 minutes. Mix in the ground chuck, minced garlic, black pepper, salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs, which should make about 28.
- Arrange the meatballs on a cooking spray-coated baking sheet. Bake them at 325 F for roughly 10 minutes. Turn them over and continue baking for another 10 minutes. Once cooked, drain any excess fat.
- In a separate pan, combine the apple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ground ginger, and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Cook this mixture, stirring often, until it thickens into a glaze. Pour the finished glaze over the drained meatballs. Scatter the sliced green onions on top.
- The traditional method involves frying, but baking and draining is a preferred alternative. You can choose whichever cooking technique you like best.
