Spicy and Sweet Green Beans
This American side dish uses convenient canned French-cut green beans for speed. They are simmered with crispy bacon and sweet onion slices, then flavoured with a blend of brown sugar, chili powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The result is a savoury, sweet, and lightly spiced accompaniment that is particularly good served alongside pork and apple dishes. The entire recipe takes about 30 minutes to prepare.
Ingredients
- 2 slices bacon, diced
- 2 (15 ounce) cans French-cut green beans
- 0.5 sweet onion, sliced
- 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, or to taste
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon, or to taste
- 1 pinch salt, or to taste
- 1 dash ground nutmeg, or to taste
Method
- Add the diced bacon to a large skillet. Cook it, turning now and then, until it is browned all over, about 10 minutes. Transfer the bacon to a plate covered with paper towel using a slotted spoon.
- Pour away the liquid from just one can of green beans. Tip the contents of both cans into a saucepan and place it over low heat. Allow it to reach a simmer, then mix in the bacon and sliced sweet onion.
- Turn the heat up to medium-low. Mix the chili powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg into the green bean mixture. Continue cooking until the onion slices have turned translucent but are not soft, about 10 minutes.
