Spiced Tea and Pomegranate Frappe

This blended frappe is a cool and spiced beverage. Pomegranate juice is simmered with fresh ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and sugar. Black tea is then steeped in the warm mixture. Once cooled, the spiced tea is blended with ice and cream until thick and frothy, creating a single serving of a uniquely flavoured drink.

Spiced Tea and Pomegranate Frappe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened pomegranate juice (I use Pom brand)
  • 1 piece gingerroot, peeled and sliced (1 inch)
  • 3 whole allspice, slightly crushed
  • 2 inches cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 2 (2 g) bags black tea (I use English Breakfast)
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup 10% cream (I use fat-free half and half)

Method

  1. Place the pomegranate juice into a small saucepan and stir in the sliced ginger, allspice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and sugar.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it boil for 1 minute. Lower the heat, cover the pan, and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the tea bags and continue to simmer for 2 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes.
  3. Take out the tea bags and leave the liquid to cool completely to room temperature.
  4. Pour the cooled liquid through a strainer into a blender, discarding the spices. Add the ice cubes and cream to the blender and process on a high setting until the ice is fully crushed and the drink has thickened.
  5. Transfer the blended frappe into a glass and serve immediately.
