Southern Crock Pot Apple Butter
This traditional Southern apple butter is prepared effortlessly in a slow cooker. Fresh apples are simmered with apple cider for hours until tender, then blended with sugar and warm spices. The result is a thick, deeply flavoured spread perfect for toast, scones, or as a filling. It yields approximately 8 cups and can be stored in the fridge, frozen, or sealed in jars for longer keeping.
Ingredients
- 16 cups cored and chopped apples, do not peel
- 2 cups apple cider
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon clove
Method
- Place the chopped apples and apple cider into your crock pot.
- Put the lid on and allow it to cook on low for 10-12 hours.
- Puree the cooked apple mixture, then pour it back into the crock pot and stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and cloves.
- Cover the pot again and continue cooking on low for 1 hour.
- For storage, the apple butter can be kept in the refrigerator for several weeks. Alternatively, transfer it into hot, sterilised jars and seal them.
- You may also freeze the finished apple butter in suitable freezer containers.
