These Japanese-style wraps are an excellent choice for a festive starter or a light dinner. Strips of beef steak are quickly fried with red pepper, then combined with garlic, ginger and sesame seeds. A glossy sauce of soy and sesame oil coats the mixture, which is then spooned into crisp Baby Gem lettuce leaves. This dish serves six as part of a shared meal and can be prepared in about 30 minutes.

Sesame Beef Wraps

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 175g beef steak, cut into thin strips
  • 1 red pepper deseeded and thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves thinly sliced
  • 2cm piece fresh root ginger thinly sliced and cut into matchsticks
  • 1 tbsp sesame seed
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Baby Gem lettuces
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Method

  1. Warm the vegetable oil in a large frying pan. Once the pan is very hot, add the beef strips and sliced red pepper. Cook for a few mins until the beef is cooked through and everything has a light colour. Add the garlic, ginger and sesame seeds, cooking for 1-2 mins more while stirring frequently until they begin to turn golden.
  2. Add the soy sauce and 2 tbsp water, allowing it to bubble until the liquid reduces and becomes slightly syrupy. Finish by drizzling in the sesame oil. Take the Baby Gem lettuces and separate the leaves, arranging them on a serving plate. Place a small amount of the beef mixture into each lettuce leaf, spoon over the remaining pan juices and serve while still warm.
