Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup milk
Method
- Combine the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder in your first bowl.
- Cut the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles fine crumbs.
- In a second bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
- Review the list of optional add-ins provided.
- Choose one of the flavour options and stir it into the dry ingredient mixture.
- Create a hollow in the centre of the dry mix and pour in the combined wet ingredients.
- Mix everything together swiftly by hand, then tip the dough onto a surface dusted with flour.
- Knead the dough gently six to ten times.
- Divide the dough into two equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a ball, then pat it down into a round.
- Cut each round into four to six wedges.
- If desired, brush the tops with a little milk.
- Bake the scones at 425'F for 15 minutes.
- Switch off the oven, slightly open the door, and leave the scones inside for a further 5 minutes.
- Allow the scones to cool for a short while before serving.
