Salisbury Steak with Egg Noodles
This recipe creates tender ground beef patties flavoured with French onion soup and breadcrumbs, simmered in a savoury ketchup and Worcestershire gravy. It's all served over a bed of hot egg noodles for a comforting and complete meal. Optional fresh parsley adds a bright finish. The entire dish comes together in just 17 minutes, making it a perfect weeknight option. Instructions for freezing the patties and gravy are also included for easy meal prep.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can condensed French onion soup, undiluted,divided
- 1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 pinch pepper
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard
- 6 cups hot cooked egg noodles
- chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Method
- Beat the egg in a large mixing bowl.
- Mix in 1/3 cup of the undiluted soup along with the dry breadcrumbs, salt and pepper.
- Gently combine the ground beef with the egg mixture.
- Form the beef mixture into six oval-shaped patties.
- Cook the patties in a skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned.
- Take the patties out of the skillet and set them aside. pour off the drippings.
- Whisk the flour and water together in the same skillet until smooth, then stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and the rest of the soup. Bring this mixture to a boil.
- Continue to cook and stir the gravy for 2 minutes.
- Place the browned patties back into the skillet with the gravy.
- Put a lid on the skillet and let it simmer for 15 minutes, or until the meat is fully cooked.
- Spoon the patties and gravy over portions of the hot cooked egg noodles.
- Add a garnish of chopped fresh parsley, if you like.
- This recipe yields 6 servings.
- For freezing, place the meat patties and gravy together in a freezer-safe container.
- Do not freeze the noodles. cook them fresh when you are ready to eat.
- If using a plastic zipper bag, remove as much air as possible before sealing it shut.
- Alternatively, you can freeze the mixture in plastic containers, leaving a 1/2 inch space at the top.
- Thaw the frozen patties and gravy completely, then reheat them in a microwave until piping hot.
