Mulled Wine Cocktail
This German cocktail is an ideal party drink that can be prepared in advance. A spiced sugar syrup is infused with star anise, cinnamon, and cloves, then combined with sliced lemon, clementines, Cointreau, and a light red wine like Beaujolais. After chilling, it can be served cold over ice or gently warmed for a traditional hot mulled wine, garnished with orange zest and star anise.
Ingredients
- 100g/4oz light muscovado sugar
- 1 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 150ml water
- 1 lemon
- 2 clementines
- 150ml Cointreau
- 750ml/ 11/4pint bottle light red wine such as Beaujolais
- Twist of orange zest and a star anise, to serve
Method
- Place 100g light muscovado sugar into a saucepan with 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 4 cloves, and 150ml water. Heat gently until it reaches a boil, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely.
- Allow the mixture to simmer for 2 mins, then transfer it to a large jug to cool. Thinly slice 1 lemon and 2 clementines, adding them to the jug along with 150ml Cointreau and a 750ml bottle of light red wine, such as Beaujolais. Stir everything together, cover the jug, and refrigerate for at least 2 hrs or overnight if possible.
- For serving, you can present it chilled or poured over ice, garnished with a twist of orange zest and a star anise. To serve it warm in the traditional style, simply heat the mixture through without letting it boil and pour into heatproof glasses.
