The cooking process requires two stages, first uncovered and then covered, followed by a brief resting period. Ingredients
- 1 cup (7 ounces) uncooked white rice (such as jasmine, basmati, or sushi rice), rinsed
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, optional
Method
- Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl in the sink. Run cold water over it, stirring with your hands. Empty the bowl as it fills. continue until the water runs clear.
- Mix the rinsed rice, 1 1/2 cups water, and the optional salt in an 8-cup microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup.
- Cook without a cover on HIGH for 9 minutes. The water should be largely absorbed and the dish's edges will look dry.
- Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid, plate, or plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH for another 4 minutes until the rice is tender.
- Allow the rice to stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Use a fork to fluff the grains before serving.
