KFC Copycat Gravy
This recipe recreates the flavour of the popular fast-food gravy at home. It uses a base of butter and flour cooked into a roux, combined with finely chopped onion, water, and both beef and chicken bouillon for a deep, savoury taste. The process involves patiently cooking the roux until golden before whisking in the liquids and simmering to the perfect consistency. You'll have a rich, peppery gravy ideal for serving with mashed potatoes, chicken, or biscuits.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 5 tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour
- 2.5 cups water
- 2 teaspoons beef bouillon
- 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon
- freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method
- Place 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter into a skillet and melt it. Stir in the chopped onion and cook for about 5 minutes until it becomes translucent.
- Introduce the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and allow it to melt. Whisk the flour into the butter to create a thick, smooth paste.
- Keep cooking this mixture, whisking it continuously, for about 20 minutes until the flour turns a golden colour and develops a toasted aroma.
- Pour in the water and add both the beef and chicken bouillon, whisking thoroughly to eliminate any lumps. Mix in the pepper and bring the liquid to a boil.
- Simmer the gravy, stirring frequently, for 8 to 10 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.
