Hamburger Steak and Gravy
This recipe creates a comforting dish of seasoned beef patties, known as hamburger steaks, served in a savoury homemade gravy. The patties are formed from ground beef mixed with evaporated milk and seasonings, then lightly coated in flour before pan-frying. A simple gravy is made using the pan drippings, flour, water, and beef bouillon, with the patties simmered in it to finish. The entire process takes about 40 minutes to complete, resulting in a hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground chuck or 1 lb ground sirloin
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper, plus extra
- 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/4 cup drippings or 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups water
- 3 teaspoons beef bouillon
Method
- Combine the ground beef with the salt, pepper, onion powder, and evaporated milk.
- Shape the mixture into six patties, noting the texture will be quite soft.
- In a separate bowl, mix the 1/2 cup of flour with your preferred amount of pepper.
- Coat each patty thoroughly on both sides with the seasoned flour mixture.
- Transfer the coated patties to a preheated pan containing butter.
- Fry the patties for 3 minutes on the first side, then flip and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Take the cooked patties out of the pan and set them aside.
- Measure the drippings left in the pan and add butter if needed to reach a total of 1/4 cup.
- Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup of flour and cook it for a couple of minutes.
- Pour in the 2 cups of water and add the 3 teaspoons of beef bouillon, stirring well.
- Return the patties to the pan, submerging them in the gravy, and let them cook for 20 minutes.
