Frozen Chicken in the Crock Pot
This method demonstrates how to prepare a whole frozen chicken directly in a slow cooker. The bird cooks with a mixture of chicken gravy, water, and white wine, creating its own sauce. Carrots and onion are added partway through the cooking process. After approximately 6 hours on low, the chicken is rested before serving. The resulting gravy can be strained and thickened. This is a convenient way to prepare a complete meal with minimal prep.
Ingredients
- 1 (5 1/2 lb) whole chickens, gizzards removed
- 2 (3/4 ounce) envelopes chicken gravy mix
- 3/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup white wine
- 4 medium carrots, cut into 1 inch chunks
- 1 large onion, cut into wedges
Method
- Lightly coat the interior of your slow cooker with cooking spray.
- Give the chicken a quick rinse and position it inside the cooker.
- Combine the packets of chicken gravy with 3/4 cup water and 3/4 cup white wine.
- Pour this liquid mixture over the chicken in the pot.
- Set the cooker to low and leave it to cook for approximately 6 hours.
- Roughly 1 1/2 hours before the cooking finishes, introduce the carrot chunks and onion wedges.
- Once cooked, transfer the chicken to a cutting board and allow it to rest for at least 15 minutes.
- Remove the vegetables from the gravy, then strain the liquid and thicken it if you wish.
- Serve the chicken and vegetables, perhaps with mashed potatoes and a fresh salad.
