Dough Ornament Recipe
This straightforward recipe for salt dough ornaments requires only three common ingredients. The process involves mixing, shaping, and baking to create durable, blank canvases for your festive creativity. Once cooled, these homemade ornaments can be painted and varnished, making them perfect personalised gifts or cherished holiday decorations for your tree. The recipe yields approximately 30 ornaments.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1.5 cups warm water
Method
- Collect the required ingredients and preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
- Combine the flour and salt thoroughly in a bowl using a whisk. Slowly add the warm water, approximately 1/2 cup at a time, mixing until a dough comes together. Once stirring becomes tough, finish combining with your hands.
- Place the dough onto a surface dusted with flour and knead it until it feels soft and workable.
- Roll the dough out to a 1/8 inch thickness and cut out shapes using your chosen cookie cutters.
- Move the cut shapes to cookie sheets that are not greased. Use a toothpick to create a small hole in every ornament for threading string later.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour until hardened, remembering to swap the baking sheets between racks halfway through the cooking time.
- Take the ornaments from the oven and allow them to cool completely. You can then decorate them with acrylic paints and apply a craft varnish for protection. Finally, thread a piece of string through each hole.
- Finish decorating your ornaments and display them with pride.
