Crock Pot Apple Butter
This recipe guides you through creating a deep, flavourful apple butter entirely in a slow cooker. It begins with chopped apples mixed with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. The mixture cooks for an extended period, first on a high setting then on low, until it becomes thick and richly coloured. After a final uncovered simmer, the spread can be smoothed and packed into containers for freezing, yielding several pints of this classic preserve.
Ingredients
- 5 1/2 lbs apples, peeled and finely chopped (I use 3-4 different types of apples)
- 4 cups sugar
- 2 -3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Method
- Put the prepared apples into a large mixing bowl.
- Mix the sugar with the cinnamon, ground cloves, and salt in a separate container.
- Pour this dry mixture over the apples and combine everything thoroughly.
- Transfer the apple mix to the crock pot, put the lid on, and set it to cook on high for 1 hour.
- Reduce the setting to low, keep covered, and continue cooking for 9-11 hours until the mixture is a dark brown and has thickened significantly.
- Give the apple butter a stir from time to time during the long cooking period.
- Take the lid off and let it cook on the low setting for an additional 1 hour.
- For a smoother texture, you can whisk the finished butter until it is uniform.
- Ladle the apple butter into containers suitable for the freezer, ensuring you leave a 1/2-inch gap at the top.
- Seal the containers and place them in the freezer for storage.
