Compote with Frozen Berries
This versatile fruit compote is an excellent way to use frozen berries, creating a sweet sauce ideal for enhancing pancakes, yoghurt, or ice cream. The method is straightforward, requiring just a saucepan and a few common ingredients. It cooks in about 30 minutes and can be served either warm or cold, depending on your preference. The result is a thick, flavourful topping with a texture reminiscent of a chutney or jam.
Ingredients
- 0.5 cup frozen blueberries
- 0.25 cup frozen strawberries
- 0.25 cup frozen raspberries
- 0.25 cup raw sugar
- 0.25 cup water
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon unbleached all-purpose flour
Method
- Place the blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, sugar, water, and butter into a small saucepan. Bring the contents to a boil and cook for about 5 minutes until the fruit softens and breaks apart. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes, giving it an occasional stir.
- Take the pan off the heat and let the compote thicken to a chutney or thick jam-like consistency. You can stir in the flour at this stage for additional thickness if you wish. This compote can be served either warm or after being chilled.
