Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
This is a wonderfully fluffy chocolate buttercream frosting, considered a top choice alongside whipped cream versions. You can tailor the sugar and cocoa levels to suit your taste, though the provided quantities are a proven favourite. Sifting the sugar and cocoa is recommended for a smooth texture, which can be done with a fork if a sifter is not available. Using whipping cream yields the lightest result, with half and half as a good alternative. The recipe yields about 2 cups.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 1/3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
- 1/3 cup whipping cream (or half and half, can use milk too)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted (makes a medium flavor)
Method
- Let the butter soften to room temperature, ensuring it does not become overly soft and lose its form. Place it in a large bowl and beat until light and fluffy.
- Mix the sifted cocoa powder and vanilla into the creamed butter.
- Gradually incorporate the sifted confectioners' sugar and the whipping cream.
- Use an electric mixer to beat the mixture for approximately 3-5 minutes until it reaches your preferred consistency.
