Chinese Pork Ribs
These Chinese pork ribs are a speedy family favourite, ideal for a main course. The ribs are first simmered, then coated in a glossy glaze of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, vinegar, and Chinese five-spice powder. They are finished under the grill or on the barbecue until sticky and lightly charred. Ready in about 40 minutes, this dish is a fantastic option for lunch or supper.
Ingredients
- 12 meaty pork ribs
- 100ml hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp clear honey
- 1 tbsp vinegar (you can use cider, malt or wine)
- 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
Method
- Place the pork ribs into a large pan and add enough water to cover them. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and let them simmer for 15 mins. While they cook, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, vinegar and five-spice powder in a jug, stirring well.
- Drain the cooked ribs thoroughly. Brush them generously with the prepared glaze. If you plan to barbecue them later, chill the glazed ribs, cover them and store in the fridge.
- If you are using the grill, preheat it to high. Cook the ribs on the barbecue or under the grill for 15-20 mins, turning them occasionally, until they become glossy and develop a slight char in spots. Serve immediately while hot.
