Cheesy Minute Steak Casserole
This indulgent casserole is a family favourite, combining quick cooking minute steaks with egg noodles in a tangy, cheesy sauce. It is a substantial one dish meal that comes together without much fuss. Perfect for a busy weeknight or for taking to a potluck supper, it bakes until golden and bubbly. The recipe yields enough for six to eight servings.
Ingredients
- 1 lb frozen sandwich minute steaks, broken into pieces (approx 16 steaks)
- 1 (12 ounce) bag wide egg noodles
- 1 (8 ounce) bag shredded mild cheddar cheese
- 1 (12 ounce) bag shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 medium onion, roughly chopped
- 1 envelope onion soup mix
- 1 (14 ounce) bottle ketchup (or approx 2 cups)
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt)
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
Method
- Cook the egg noodles in boiling water, then drain them.
- Place the drained noodles to one side.
- Take a large skillet and cook the steak pieces with the chopped onion until browned.
- Pour away any extra fat from the skillet.
- Stir in the ketchup, dry onion soup mix, dried basil and garlic powder.
- Let this cook gently for 5 minutes, giving it a stir now and then.
- Combine the cooked noodles with the steak and sauce mixture.
- Spread half of this combined mixture into the base of a 13x9 casserole dish.
- Cover this layer with the cheddar cheese and place half of the butter in small pieces on top.
- Add the remaining mixture, then dot with the rest of the butter and finish with the mozzarella cheese.
- Dust the top with the dried Italian seasoning.
- Bake without a cover at 375 for 30 minutes.
