These homemade dog biscuits are packed with flavour from cheddar cheese and oats. The dough is mixed with cornmeal and bouillon, then rolled out and cut into bone shapes before baking until crisp and golden. They make a crunchy, satisfying treat for your dog, yielding several dozen biscuits depending on the size of your cutter.

Cheesy Dog Biscuit Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats (such as Quaker)
  • 1/3 cup margarine
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant chicken bouillon or 2 teaspoons instant beef bouillon
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • wheat flour

Method

  1. Set your oven to heat to 325 degrees.
  2. Prepare your cookie sheets by greasing them.
  3. Place the rolled oats, margarine and boiling water into a large bowl and allow the mixture to stand for 10 minutes. Mix in the cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and beaten egg until well combined. Lightly spoon wheat flour into a measuring cup and level it off. Incorporate the flour one cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition to create a firm dough.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead in any remaining flour until the dough is smooth and not sticky, which should take 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat the dough out to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Use a bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits. Position them one inch apart on your prepared cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes, or until they turn a golden brown colour. Allow the biscuits to cool fully. Keep them stored with a loose cover. This recipe makes 3 1/2 dozen large dog biscuits or 8 dozen small ones.
