Cheesy Chicken Fried Steak
This recipe creates a satisfying main course of tender steaks, seasoned with garlic salt and pepper. They are coated in flour, dipped in egg, and then covered with cheese cracker crumbs before frying. The breaded cutlets are served with a simple, heated gravy that includes sliced mushrooms for added flavour. The entire process takes around 30 minutes to complete for four servings.

- 4 beef steaks or 4 pork cube steaks
- garlic salt
- pepper
- 2 cups cheese crackers, crumbs
- 2 eggs, beaten
- flour
- oil
- 1 can of your favorite beef gravy, I use franco american beef gravy, actually low in fat.
- 1 (4 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained
Method
- Prepare crumbs by crushing your chosen cheese crackers.
- Avoid using plain crackers, as cheese varieties offer superior taste.
- Season the steaks generously with garlic salt and pepper.
- Lightly dust the seasoned meat with flour.
- Coat each cutlet first in the beaten egg, then press into the cheese cracker crumbs.
- Transfer the breaded steaks to a plate and refrigerate them for 15 minutes or more.
- This chilling period helps the coating adhere during cooking.
- If short on time, you may omit chilling but ensure the first side is fully cooked before flipping.
- Fry the cutlets in hot oil until they achieve a golden brown colour.
- Place the fried steaks on a paper towel-lined plate to keep them warm.
- Warm the canned beef gravy together with the drained mushrooms.
- Serve the hot cutlets with the mushroom gravy passed separately for topping.
