⏱ 80 mins 🍽 Makes 12 large mince pies 🌶 british ✅ Easy 🏷 Snack

These festive treats resemble Catherine wheels more than traditional pies. Using ready-rolled puff pastry and a jar of mincemeat, they are assembled into a roll, chilled, then sliced and baked. The result is a dozen golden, almond-topped pastries perfect for enjoying warm during the holiday season. They offer a playful twist on a classic British snack.

Barney's Roly-Poly Mince Pies

Ingredients

  • 50g golden caster sugar
  • 1 sheet ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 411g jar traditional mincemeat
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 25g flaked almonds

Method

  1. Heat your oven to 200C/gas 6/ fan 180C. Sprinkle the sugar onto your work surface, unroll the pastry sheet, and roll it out to increase its size by a quarter while maintaining its rectangular form.
  2. Evenly cover the pastry with the mincemeat, leaving a 2cm border along the long sides. Fold one long edge over the filling, then roll it tightly into a log, pressing the pastry into the mincemeat. Brush the final edge with milk and seal it. Gently press both ends to plump the roll and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm. (The whole roll or pre-sliced portions can be frozen for up to 1 month.)
  3. Slice the chilled roll into 12 rounds, each roughly 3cm thick. Place them spaced apart on a baking tray and press down slightly to flatten. Sprinkle the flaked almonds over the tops. Bake for 20-30 minutes until golden and the mincemeat is sizzling. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, keeping them apart to prevent sticking. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream.
